Bardiya/Dang, Nepal — Special Report
A family with a long history of political and social involvement has reported facing threats, attacks and repeated security concerns in Nepal.
Jhupa Chand Thakuri has been associated with the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) since approximately January 2002. According to his family, he served as a Ward Member and participated in political and social activities within his community.
His son, Surendra Kumar Chand, has also described his own association with the Maoist party through musical activities. According to Chand, he created songs in support of the party and its activities, including during his time in Kathmandu.
The family says that political hostility and pressure eventually contributed to their relocation from Rajapur-2, Chainpur, Bardiya, to Lamahi, Dang.
The family reports that serious incidents continued during the political unrest of 2025.
On 5 September 2025, a vehicle associated with Jhupa Chand Thakuri was reportedly burned in Kathmandu while he was attending a party meeting.
On 8 September 2025, the family's home in Chainpur, Rajapur-2, Bardiya, was reportedly attacked with a petrol bomb and caught fire. The family says the house suffered extensive damage and Thakuri's wife suffered a minor burn injury.
The family also reports receiving further threats on 22 February 2026 in both Bardiya and Dang. According to Surendra Kumar Chand, the threats were communicated through Facebook/social media and directly.
The threats reportedly included accusations concerning political problems and corruption in Nepal. Chand returned to Nepal in approximately March 2026 but says he was unable to remain in his family area for an extended period because he did not feel safe.
He subsequently returned to Kathmandu and later returned to Australia. The family says it has retained police reports, medical documents, photographs, videos, social media material and news reports relating to the incidents.
The family has stated that these materials can be provided to relevant authorities for verification. The family continues to express concern about the safety of its members because of their political history, previous incidents and continuing threats.
